Al-Wataniya Private University Students Bridge Heritage and Engineering in Homs

14 April 2026

In a distinguished academic gathering, the Turathuna Foundation hosted a scientific delegation from the Faculty of Architectural Engineering at Al-Wataniya Private University (WPU) of Hama on Thursday, April 9, 2026. The visit focused on the exhibition "From the Rubble to the Stage," offering students a deep dive into the restoration and revival of Homs’ architectural heritage.

Restoring History: A Technical Deep Dive

The visit centered on the technical and historical aspects of preserving Syrian landmarks. Dr. Lama Musallam Abboud provided a detailed technical presentation covering:

  • The systematic stages of restoring the Homs First Theater.
  • The vital role of architectural and historical documentation.
  • Scientific methodologies adopted for the restoration and rehabilitation of heritage sites.

Students and faculty toured the exhibition, exploring various works and activities that contributed to bringing this ancient monument back to life. The experience was further enriched by documentary screenings showing the theater's transformation from destruction to its current restored state, including films produced by Into and CPF highlighting the Foundation's broader revival efforts.

Voices of Volunteerism and Heritage Guardians

The event also highlighted the human element of heritage preservation through personal testimonies:

  • Ms. Furat al-Hajj Younes, representing the "Granddaughters of Julia Domna" volunteer team, shared her journey in heritage training and how it strengthened her connection to local history.
  • Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim, a long-standing member of the "Youth Heritage Guardians Club," discussed his experience since 2024 and his ongoing commitment to volunteering for his city's legacy.

Sun Trails: Re-discovering the Old City

Architectural Engineer Naziha al-Qabbani, a member of the Board of Trustees, introduced the students to the "Sun Trails" project. She detailed its significance in highlighting the landmarks of Old Homs and outlined the heritage path organized specifically for this architectural delegation.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The Turathuna Foundation expressed its profound appreciation for the architects of tomorrow, noting that while the foundation welcomes everyone, architects hold a special place as the "hope of the future" for rebuilding Syria.

The Foundation extended its gratitude to:

  • Al-Wataniya Private University of Hama: Specifically President Dr. Ahed Khuzam and the Dean of the Faculty of Architectural Engineering, Dr. Safwat Ibrahim Pasha, for their leadership in making this visit a success.
  • The Academic Community: All participating professors and students who traveled from Hama to Homs, demonstrating a sincere desire to learn and engage with the field.

Closing Message

"What we preserve... defines who we are." This visit stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between academic institutions and field organizations in building national awareness and safeguarding Syria's identity.
