Journey with the Shadows: A Traditional Shadow Theatre Performance at Homs First Theater

The Turathuna Foundation hosted a distinguished cultural evening at Homs First Theater, featuring a traditional Shadow Theatre performance presented in cooperation with Hayat Foundation and supported by Action for Hope.

The production was conceived, written, and directed by renowned shadow theatre artist Ghalia Shehadeh, who delivered an exceptional solo performance, bringing to life four distinct characters—Karakoz, Iwaz, Houriya, and Zannoun—through remarkable vocal versatility and theatrical expression, demonstrating the richness of this traditional performing art.

Adding an innovative dimension to the evening, the production combined traditional shadow theatre with live stage performance through the introduction of the character Abu Lam'ei, portrayed by actor Alaa Al Sheikh. This creative integration enhanced audience engagement while presenting the heritage art form in a contemporary theatrical framework.

The performance was interwoven with a selection of traditional Syrian songs and Aleppine Qudud, creating an immersive cultural experience that celebrated Syria's rich musical and theatrical heritage. Live musical performances were presented by Michael Nasser, Samhar Lwisah, Tony Daiob, and Rami Al Gharbi, whose performances enriched the evening with authentic melodies and heartfelt interpretations.

Beyond its artistic value, the production explored the history and evolution of Syrian Shadow Theatre, highlighting its inscription on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2018. It also showcased the introduction of female characters into this traditionally male-dominated art form through new theatrical figures created by Ghalia Shehadeh, while addressing a number of contemporary social issues through a message promoting peace, coexistence, and mutual respect.

The event attracted an enthusiastic audience whose interaction and appreciation reflected the continued relevance of traditional performing arts and the importance of preserving and revitalizing Syria's intangible cultural heritage.
