Bridging Academic Theory

Homs University Students Explore the Journey from Rubble to Stage

10 April 2026

In an ongoing effort to bridge academic theory with professional practice, the Turathuna Foundation hosted students and faculty from the Faculty of Architecture at Homs University on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The scientific visit centered on the acclaimed exhibition, "From Rubble to the Stage," which documents the meticulous journey of reviving local theater from the ruins of destruction.

Bridging Theory and Practice

Dr. Lama Abboud, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, led an in-depth guided tour for the students. She detailed the complex phases of restoration, including:

  • Damage Documentation: The initial technical assessment of structural loss.
  • Rehabilitation: The engineering challenges of restoring historical integrity.
  • Cultural Restoration: Re-establishing the theater’s role as a community hub.

The visit also featured a briefing by Engineer Naziha al-Qabbani, Board Member and Director of the "Sun Trails" Project, who outlined the historical landmarks included in the upcoming heritage tour.

Community and Volunteer Engagement

The students gained insight into grassroots heritage efforts through two unique perspectives:

  • Ms. Furat Al-Haj Younis shared her experience from the "Heritage Women: Granddaughters of Julia Domna" program.
  • Dr. Youssef Ibrahim discussed his professional contributions as a volunteer within the "Heritage Guardians Club."

Strengthening Academic Partnerships

The foundation extended its deep gratitude to Professor Dr. Tariq Hussamuddin, President of Homs University, for his steadfast support of experiential learning. Special thanks were also given to Dr. Abdul Rahman Hamdoun, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, for his commitment to aligning student skills with the realities of the labor market.

The event was attended by Dr. Abdul Hamid Al-Masri, Vice Dean for Scientific Affairs, along with several faculty members.

"We take great pride in these encounters," the Foundation stated. "They are essential in fostering awareness regarding the preservation and revival of our architectural heritage."

Through this partnership, both institutions continue to pave the way for a new generation of architects dedicated to the cultural and structural rebirth of the region.
