Uncovering Ancient Homs

Unlocking the Ancient Secrets of the Bab Hud Neighborhood

10 June 2026

From the stage of the Orthodox Theater to the ancient stones of Bab Hud, a new cultural journey has unfolded in the heart of Homs. Under the umbrella of the "Trails of the Sun" project, the Turathuna (Our Heritage) Foundation recently launched its latest heritage trail, taking participants on an immersive exploration of the city's rich history and architectural marvels.

The trail began at the historic Homs First Theater, the current headquarters of the Turathuna Foundation—before winding its way toward the ancient Bab Hud neighborhood. The journey was marked by a shared sense of wonder and a deep appreciation for a city whose stories are seemingly endless.

The initiative was organized in collaboration with permanent partners Homs University and the Homs Directorate of Tourism. The event drew a diverse and enthusiastic crowd, including members of JCI Homs, the Capital of Peace Association, and the Historical Society of Homs. Academics, researchers, engineers, and heritage enthusiasts of all ages gathered, united by their passion for discovering the cultural treasures of their city.

Engineer Naziha Al-Qabbani, member of the Turathuna Foundation's Board of Trustees and Director of the "Trails of the Sun" project, led the tour. She provided comprehensive insights into the landmarks visited, detailing their historical, cultural, and architectural significance. Al-Qabbani drew attention to subtle details often overlooked by passersby, emphasizing how these elements form an authentic part of the city's identity and collective memory. Organizers extended their deep gratitude for her immense efforts in preparing and executing the trail.

The event was further distinguished by the participation of several prominent local figures, including:

  • Simaz Naji, Head of the Tourism Marketing and Media Department
  • Haya Samaan, President of JCI Homs
  • Nagham Bashour, Vice President of the Capital of Peace Association

The trail was meticulously coordinated by the Turathuna team, working alongside the "Heritage Guards" youth team and the "Julia Domna's Granddaughters" women's volunteer group.

Through initiatives like this, organizers aim to highlight that Homs is more than just buildings and streets; it is a tapestry of human stories, a living memory, and a history that deserves to be told and preserved for future generations.

"Knowledge is the first step to preserving heritage, and what we preserve today will remain a witness to who we are tomorrow," the organizers stated, thanking all partners and participants. As the trail concluded, one sentiment was shared by all: the more one walks through the ancient neighborhoods of Homs, the more one loves it.
