"From Rubble to the Stage" Exhibition

Documenting the Resurrection of a Cultural Landmark

Organized by the Turathuna Foundation at the Orthodox Theater (the first theater in Homs), the "From Rubble to the Stage" exhibition serves as a profound visual and historical documentation of this heritage edifice's journey. The project traces the theater's vibrant origins and its pivotal role in the city's cultural life, the severe destruction it endured during the war, and its ultimate meticulous restoration and rehabilitation.

Relying on a rich collection of audio-visual materials, including documentary posters and short films, the exhibition powerfully illustrates the transformation of the space from silent rubble back into a living cultural hub. It stands as a testament to the foundation's core belief that preserving heritage is an essential pillar of protecting our collective memory and identity.

The opening day witnessed a distinguished official and cultural presence, reflecting the immense community and diplomatic support for the city's revival. Notable attendees included:

The inauguration featured a guided tour of the exhibition, the screening of two documentary films, and official remarks highlighting the project's significance. The evening beautifully concluded with a symbolic operatic performance that officially breathed artistic life back onto the theater's stage.

A Vibrant Program of Cultural Events

To actively engage the community, the exhibition hosted a series of dynamic activities:

  • Community and NGO Tours: Dedicated sessions to showcase the experiences of foundation volunteers, highlight Turathuna's ongoing programs, and discuss the profound impact of cultural work in reviving the city.
  • Musical Evenings: A poignant musical night titled "Sing for Those Who Departed," featuring artist Khater Dawa and the Mosaic Band, which beautifully evoked the collective memory and bridged the city's past with its present.
  • Cultural Lectures: An insightful lecture titled "The Unknown History of the Theater," delivered by the esteemed writer and playwright Mr. Abdul Karim Amreen.

A Lasting Community Impact

Throughout its run, the exhibition welcomed numerous visits from local figures, institutions, and the general public, reflecting a deep-seated interest in the city's cultural rebirth. "From Rubble to the Stage" provided a living model of how culture can simultaneously revive physical spaces and uplift the human spirit. By reconnecting the community with its memory and identity, the project reaffirmed that safeguarding heritage is fundamentally about safeguarding the very soul of the city.
