Mouneer Al-Shaarani's "Calligraphic Rhythms" Exhibition
Arabic Calligraphy: A Living Memory and a Renewed Visual Identity
Rooted in the Turathuna Foundation’s profound belief in the role of the arts in reviving cultural memory and enhancing the visual identity of our spaces, a strategic and distinguished partnership was formed with the internationally renowned Syrian artist and calligrapher, Mouneer Al-Shaarani—who also designed the foundation’s official logo. This partnership culminated in a comprehensive cultural and artistic experience hosted at the Orthodox Theater (the first theater in Homs).
Returning Spirit and Beauty to the City
The foundation proudly hosted the "Calligraphic Rhythms" exhibition by artist Mouneer Al-Shaarani, marking his exceptional artistic return to Homs after a 14-year absence. This exhibition was not merely a passing event; it stood as a prominent cultural milestone that reconnected the city with the contemporary art movement. It solidified the theater's role as an expansive space that embraces beauty, encourages dialogue, and stimulates creativity.
The exhibition featured 38 calligraphic artworks spanning various schools and styles of Arabic calligraphy. It offered visitors a unique visual experience that celebrated the Arabic letter as an instrument of beauty, a carrier of memory, and an expression of identity within a contemporary artistic context.
About the Artist: Mouneer Al-Shaarani
Mouneer Al-Shaarani (born 1952) is a highly acclaimed Syrian calligrapher, designer, and writer. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University (1977), he trained under the tutelage of the great Syrian calligrapher Badawi Al-Dierany. Al-Shaarani is internationally recognized for his innovative and modern approach to Arabic calligraphy. He is celebrated for moving the craft beyond traditional and strictly religious contexts, employing it instead to express secular, philosophical, and poetic themes. By developing new fonts and reviving forgotten historical scripts, his work has been exhibited globally and is highly regarded for transforming Arabic calligraphy into a profound medium of contemporary visual art.
Interactive Tracks and Capacity Building
The collaboration transcended the boundaries of a visual art display to include a rich program of accompanying cultural and interactive activities:
- The Kufic Calligraphy Workshop: A specialized workshop directed by Mouneer Al-Shaarani, targeting young calligraphers, graphic designers, and students of architecture and fine arts. The workshop provided a fertile training ground that combined theoretical foundations with practical application, introducing participants to the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy and the methods of its contemporary adaptation.
- Lecture: "Arabic Calligraphy and its Renewal": An intellectual platform where the artist shared his extensive journey and aesthetic vision for renewing Arabic calligraphy. He highlighted the vital role of the letter in shaping contemporary visual culture and documenting identity.
- The Cultural Field Trail: The program included an interactive trail starting from the Orthodox Theater, bridging the city's architecture, artistic identity, and deep-rooted cultural memory.
This collaboration serves as a living, inspiring model of what cultural partnerships can yield during a phase of recovery. It proved that art is not a luxury, but rather a space to reintroduce beauty as a fundamental human need. It remains an active element in building awareness, strengthening a sense of belonging, and restoring the soul of a city that is determined to rise once again.
