Man Does Not Live by Bread Alone
Art as a Space for Healing and Peacebuilding
Driven by the Turathuna Foundation’s profound belief that rebuilding the human spirit is just as vital as rebuilding physical stones, the "Man Does Not Live by Bread Alone" project was launched to affirm a core truth: in the aftermath of war, art is not a dispensable luxury, but a fundamental human need and a primary engine for recovery.
Reclaiming Beauty and Memory
After long years of conflict, the prevailing image of Syria has often been confined to scenes of destruction and basic survival. Meanwhile, the presence of beauty and art in daily life has retreated, particularly among younger generations. This project was initiated to reaffirm the importance of art as an effective catalyst for psychological and social recovery. It serves as a powerful tool for building peace, restoring hope, creating safe spaces for expression, and deepening a sense of belonging.
Homs First Theater: An Incubator for Syrian Creativity
The foundation's successful restoration of Homs First Theater, along with the deep credibility built over years of dedicated work, served as the true launching pad for this initiative. Our efforts earned the profound trust of leading Syrian visual artists, who generously contributed valuable artworks to be exhibited and preserved within the theater's walls, united by their belief in the nobility and cultural significance of this initiative.
Project Objectives
The project aims to reconnect the community—especially the youth—with the rich legacy of Syrian artists and the elevating role of art in human life. This is achieved by organizing specialized art exhibitions that feature paintings and sculptures by artists from Homs, or those who share a deep spiritual and cultural connection to the city.
We are immensely proud to showcase exceptional artworks from a distinguished group of pioneering Syrian artists, including:
- Muhammad Tulaimat
- Abdul Qader Azzouz
- Abdullah Murad
- Edouard Shahda
- Fadwa Shahda
- Afaf Kharma
- Fadi Yazigi
- Awn Al-Droubi
- Bassam Jbeili
- Boutros Al-Maari
- Maysoun Al-Habal
- Ghassan Nanna
Our Vision for the Future
The "Man Does Not Live by Bread Alone" project aspires to establish the Orthodox Theater as a living sanctuary for art and beauty. It is a space designed to reignite the public's passion for culture, offering the new generation an exceptional opportunity to witness the authentic face of Syria—the Syria of art, creativity, and an immortal, living memory.
